How to Grow Red Roselle (Erra Gongura): A Step-by-Step Guide

Seed Quality:
Our heirloom Gongura seeds are free from harmful chemical coatings. They are carefully selected to grow into robust plants with lush green leaves and vibrant flowers.

Pot Selection

  • Grow Bags: Use an 18"x9" or 24"x9" grow bag for optimal growth.
  • Pots: If using plastic pots, select a minimum size of 9 inches. Wider containers or grow bags provide better root space and nutrient availability, promoting healthy growth.

Soil Preparation

Red Roselle thrives in moist, well-drained soil. For best results:

  1. Soil Mix Ratio: Combine red soil, vermicompost, and cocopeat in a 2:1:1 ratio.
  2. Neem Powder: Add 2-5% neem powder to the mix to act as a natural fungicide, protecting the plant from diseases.

Sowing the Seeds

  1. Depth & Spacing: Sow the seeds ¼ inch deep and maintain a spacing of 6 inches between each plant to ensure ample room for growth.
  2. Ideal Temperature: Seeds germinate best at temperatures between 75°F and 85°F. Red Roselle germinates readily outdoors, making it perfect for direct sowing.

Light Requirements

  • Red Roselle flourishes in full sunlight but can tolerate partial afternoon shade.
  • Ensure the plant receives at least 4-5 hours of sunlight daily for healthy growth.

Watering Tips

  • Water thoroughly and gently, preferably early in the day.
  • In temperatures exceeding 35°C (95°F), water twice daily.
  • Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. Ensure your container has a proper drainage system to allow excess water to escape.

Common Issues & Pest Control

Red Roselle is generally low-maintenance and pest-resistant. However, occasional issues may include:

  • Cercospora Leaf Spot: Characterized by powdery spots that spread across leaves.
  • Solution: Use our natural bio-insecticide, Guardian, to effectively control pests and maintain plant health.

Harvesting

  • The leaves are ready to harvest 50-60 days after sowing.
  • Harvest regularly to encourage new growth and prolong the plant's life cycle.
